As summer comes to a close, it's time for your soon-to-be sophomores to begin preparing for the school year ahead. In particular, your 10th grade students should begin preparing to take their PSATs this fall.

AtomicMind's September Guide for 10th Graders

  • Refine Academic Goals: With one year of high school completed, Sophomore year is an excellent time for students to reflect about their current interests and goals. Have their academic passions changed? Have they developed a new interest in Computer Science or poetry writing? Based on these reflections, students should set clear goals for their academic year.
  • Identify Areas for Support: Setting a strong foundation early in the academic year is vital, especially with added AP and Honors courses. If students foresee needing support in particular subject areas, do not wait to get help! Please reach out to AtomicMind to pair your student with a Subject Specialist.
  • Pursue Meaningful Extracurriculars: Extracurriculars are an important part of your student's growing resume, and sophomore year is a perfect time to get involved. If your student has identified a specific interest or passion in a subject or activity, now is the time to start pursuing that interest with intention. Our Discover+ portal is an ideal place to get started in your search, and our Head Advisors are experts in pairing students with enriching out-of-class opportunities.
  • Build and Maintain Relationships with Teachers: Developing strong relationships with teachers now can prove invaluable in the future. Encourage your students to reach out ot their teachers for support, advice, or simply to discuss burgeoning academic/professional interests. These relationships can be crucial when applying for college - but will also enhance student's learning.
  • Get Creative: Our AtomicMind students have started clubs, published their writing, or started small businesses. If your student has an interest that ignites them, it's never too early to start pursuing it! Our team at AtomicMind specializes in supporting student innovation, so we're here to help bring your student's ideas to fruition.
  • Continue PSAT Preparation: The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, is a standardized test meant to prepare students for future exams and gauge their readiness for the SATs. Students should familiarize themselves with the exam, utilize online practice questions, and set a regular study schedule early. If your student would like additional support, our team of experienced PSAT/SAT tutors are able to guide your student through test prep.
