October is a busy and exciting month for your high school senior! As they navigate their first semester of 12th grade, many students are gearing up to submit their very first college applications. As Early Action and Early Decision deadlines rapidly approach, we've prepared a final checklist for you and your student.

Early Applications:

Early Action (EA) and Early Decision (ED) applications are typically due between October 15th and November 15th. At this time, students should be finished drafting and getting ready to submit their early applications (if they haven't already).

Final Application Checks:

  • Personal Information: Along with your student, confirm that all the personal information entered in your Common Application, Coalition App, or independent university portal is correct, including student name, address, citizenship, etc.
  • Transcripts: To prevent any delays in your student's application, ensure that their test scores have been sent and will be received by the application deadline (or by the transcript deadline provided by the university).
  • Test Scores: Similarly, students should ensure that their test scores have been sent out to their ED school and to all EA schools on their list.
  • Recommendations: In your application portals, you are able to see whether or not a recommender has submitted their letters of recommendation. If your student's recommenders have not yet submitted their letters, your student may want to check in to confirm that their recommenders are aware of upcoming deadlines.
  • Final Proofreading: Along with your Head Advisor or Writing Coach, conduct a final proofread of your application materials. Ensure that your personal statement, supplemental essays, and activities list are free of errors and ready to submit.
  • Portfolios/Additional Information: If your student is applying to a specialized program, they may need to submit supplementary documents, such as arts portfolios. Along with submitting their application, they will need to submit portfolios on the appropriate website (such as Slideroom).
  • AtomicMind Sign Off: Please be sure to coordinate with your AtomicMind Head Advisors to be certain that your application is ready to be sent off to colleges. Our AtomicMind team will provide a comprehensive final review before your student hits submit.
  • Celebrate and Reflect: Take a moment to celebrate such a momentous achievement with your student - they've officially applied to college!
  • Look Ahead: Please remain up to date with our college application timeline here.
